How To Convert Google Doc To PDF From Drive – No Tools/Software Necessary

Google Docs is an online suite of productivity tools like the Microsoft Word. The difference is that the later one is locally installed on your computer while Google Docs is hosted on the cloud servers. You can access Google Docs from a web browser. We are going to answer some of the questions today: How to save Google doc to pdf? How to convert Google doc to pdf? How to turn a Google doc into a PDF?

In Google Docs the files are saved in .doc format which a very common format for text files. With that being said, you can convert Google doc file to PDF using a simple trick.

It’s a really simple and connected tool for creating and editing text files. Your files can be saved in Google Drive which is among one of the most commonly used Cloud Storage. You can easily share these doc files with someone by sharing the link to the file. You can also share files and folders with other Google users just by inviting them.

If you want to quickly send the doc file to someone else, the best way is to convert it to PDF and then send it. PDF format is used for documents and can be easily printed out. Doc files can be edited easily while PDF files cannot be edited. We can just view the document or print it. So in these cases, it’s always good to share the PDF file to the other person.

How to Convert Google Doc to PDF

The method is quite simple. You will be accessing your Google Drive for converting the file. We will be using an inbuilt functionality of Google Docs to Save the document as a PDF. We will be using Google Chrome   as it is my favorite web browser. Here are few simple steps to speed up Google Chrome on Android.

You don’t need any kind of software or tool to convert Google doc to pdf, you can directly do it from Google Docs Viewer.

Here is a quick overview of the steps:

  1. Log on to Google Drive.
  2. Open the doc file with Google Docs.
  3. Save the doc as a PDF file.
  4. Re-upload the PDF file to Google Drive

Let us now see how this is done with some pictures so that you get to know exactly how its done.

Step 1: Login to Google Drive and then Sign in with your Google account.

Step 2: Once you have successfully logged in to Drive, Find the .doc file which you want to be converted to PDF. Right Click on the file and then select Open with and then Google Docs.

Step 3: You will be taken to the Google Doc page were you can make changes to the file. Now go into File and then Download as option. Now select PDF Document(.PDF) option to save your .doc file as a .pdf file. The file will be downloaded to your computer.

Step 4: I assume you need the PDF file to be present in the Drive itself. Just drag and drop the downloaded PDF to Drive so that it will be uploaded to Google Drive as a PDF file.

You have successfully converted the doc file to a PDF file using Google Drive.

How to Convert Google Doc to PDF  without Downloading

In the above method we first saved the doc file as a PDF file and then we had to upload the downloaded PDF file back to drive. I mean for small number of files, this is okay. But for more files this can take time because you have to download and then upload the file.

We have another cool trick which you can use to convert the doc file to PDF file from within Google Drive without having to download the file and upload it back.

Step 1: First of all, Login to Google Drive.

Step 2: Right Click on the file and then Open with Google Docs (we did the same in the above method also).

Step 3: Here is the trick, instead of downloading the file as PDF, click on the Print icon or press Ctrl + P on your keyboard to open up the print menu.

Step 4: You will now see the print preview and some options for the doc file. Click on the Change button under the Destination section.

Step 5: A small pop windows will be coming which prompts you to select the Destination. Under Print Destinations, you will be able to see Save to Google Drive option towards the bottom. Click on the button.

Now if you go back to Google Drive, you will be able to see a PDF file. Hurray! You just have converted the doc file to a PDF file. Your doc file will remain intact. Now you can easily share the PDF document or take a print.

How to Email a Google Doc as PDF

Instead of first converting the Google doc file to a pdf file and then sharing it via email, you can directly email a Google doc file as PDF attachment. This is the easiest way to attach the .doc file to a mail as a .pdf file and then send it as an attachment with the mail. You can do all this right from Google Drive.

Step 1: As you would normally do, Login to Google Drive.

Step 2: Right Click on the file and then Open with Google Docs (we did the same in the above method also).

Step 3: Click on the File option and then select Email as attachment. You will see a popup were you can compose the email and send it.

Step 4:  On top, you’ll be able to see Attach as option. Make sure to choose PDF. There are other options available too.

You can follow the above mentioned simple steps to convert your Google doc file to a PDF file. You can also share the Google doc as a PDF email attachment right from Google Drive.  The second method is not so direct, but gets the job done pretty easily. You don’t have to use any kind of software or tool to convert Google doc to pdf.
